Stocking Up On Firewood

The cooler days are coming! As the shadows lengthen earlier and earlier in the evenings, you'll want to invest in some firewood so you can gather around the fire pit and enjoy the beautiful fall weather, long after the sun's rays are gone for the day. Maybe you have a fireplace or a wood-burning stove that you can't wait to use. Either way, it's time to lay in a hearty supply of fwood for the autumn and winter. Check out these tips for stocking up.

Know the Terminology

Firewood is measured by the "cord." A full cord is a stack of firewood that measures 4 feet high, 8 feet long, and 4 feet deep. The total volume of a full cord of wood is about 128 cubic feet. When you purchase your load of firewood from Kurtz Bros., Inc., we strive to get the amount of wood you receive as close to the correct measurements as possible, to ensure that you get full value for your money.

Choose the Right Amount

A full cord of firewood is a good idea if you love lighting the fireplace or sitting by the fire pit each night. Perhaps you use firewood for heating purposes, in which case you may need a cord and half or more. If you don't anticipate using your wood-burning stove, fire pit, or fireplace every day throughout the autumn and winter, you probably don't need a full cord. For your convenience, Kurtz Bros. sells firewood by the 1/3 cord as well. If you just need some firewood for a special occasion, you might prefer our small firewood bundle.

Select a Dry Storage Spot

Before you order, decide where you want to store the firewood. A dry location such as a barn or shed is ideal. However, you can store the wood outside if you need to; just be sure to cover it with a large tarp and keep it up off the soil to prevent rot. Bring smaller loads of firewood into the house before you plan to use it, to give the logs time to dry out thoroughly.

Invest in Firestarters

For an easy way to get your fires going, invest in Fatwood Firestarters. These bundles are inexpensive, packed with chemical-free, 100% organic fire starters cut from old pine stumps. The natural resin in these strips of wood enables them to burn easily, making them ideal for fireplaces, pellet stoves, and backyard fire pits. All you have to do is add a couple of firestarter sticks to your prepared wood, light the sticks at both ends, sit back, and watch the fire get going. Check the Kurtz Bros. website for more details.

Don't wait too long to enjoy the glow of those flickering flames! When you're ready for your firewood delivery, just call or contact Kurtz Bros., and we'll hook you up with a fantastic load of wood, just the right size for your needs.
