Winter Curb Appeal

Winter can be tough on your yard and your home's exterior. Snow, sleet, rain, and wind often take their toll—not to mention the ugly stained snow that results from the use of road salt on icy streets and driveways. Perhaps you're selling your home during the winter or maybe you just want it to look externally attractive for passersby and for guests. Check out a few ways that you can boost winter curb appeal and help your house shine, even during the coldest months of the year.

Decorate for the Holidays

Consider some holiday or winter-themed decorations! Whether you celebrate Christmas, some other holiday, or nothing at all, a few festive-looking decorations can add charm to your home's exterior. And we're not talking a giant inflatable sleigh in the yard. In fact, when it comes to holiday decorations and curb appeal, the subtle touches are usually the most effective.

A wreath of frosty pinecones on the door, some evergreen boughs or garlands festooning the porch, and a red farm lantern or two can add a welcome hint of festive charm. If you have the budget for it, you can go all out with white twinkle lights at the eaves, wreaths on every window, and beautiful bows on the mailbox or porch railing.

Enhance the Lighting

Even if the holidays have passed, you can enhance your home's exterior by changing up the lighting. A warm glow automatically makes a house seem more appealing, so focus on lamps and bulbs that provide an amber or golden-hued light. Replace burnt-out bulbs immediately and be sure to brush off lights or lamps that become frosted over or coated with snow. Turn on the lights as soon as the sky starts to darken, so the inviting glow of your home can be enjoyed by all.

If you have an especially beautiful or unique tree, highlight its shape with string lights. Remember, white or yellow string lights have a life beyond the holidays! They can look beautiful any time of the year.

Shovel Promptly and Often

One of the best ways to help your outdoor space looking beautiful and well-kept during the winter is to keep walkways, porches, paths, and patios shoveled. Try to create nice crisp edges and straight lines when you shovel. Whether you shovel the driveway or use a snow-blower, try to get all the way down to the pavement so you don't end up with layers of hardened, dingy snow on your driveway.

Get Rid of Clutter and Debris

Is your lawn covered in twigs and leaves from the last winter storm? Are the kids' sleds or toys lying in the yard? Rake the leaves, dispose of yard waste as dictated by your local regulations, and put away toys, tools, and other implements in your shed or garage. Just like cleaning up an interior room, keeping the outdoor space tidy does wonders for the appearance of your home.

In addition to these ideas, you could consider painting your front door a vivid color to make it pop. For more visual interest in your front yard, try adding a bird feeder or a couple of potted evergreens. Repaint your mailbox in a bright color or purchase an entirely new one.
